A New Way to Think About Learning and Development
Often management workshops are conducted with PowerPoint presentations, videos, lectures, color-coded personality exercises, and role-playing activities. While these often serve to involve the staff member at the moment, following the session, they are left wondering how to use these lessons at work, or even worse, they may not believe they gained any insights from the experience.
Traditional learning and development sessions or brainstorming meetings engage the left side of the brain which guides problem-solving, logic and decision making. These are functions the executive performs daily. So, rarely, do they transform their way of thinking about an issue.
While this thinking is important, it neglects the right side of the brain where imagination, emotions, and creative thinking lives. The right side is where new ideas and insights are born. The learning tool to bring out the right brain “ah ha” moments and transformation most businesses desire is by using the Lego® Serious Play® method.
What Lego® Serious Play® (LSP) provides is the platform to model your business and experience of the future using “play.” The executives at Lego® used it to transform and grow their business when it was threatened by children moving away from building bricks to electronic toys. By adapting the LSP method, the company’s strategy changed to licensing characters and properties and propelled them to be the world’s largest toy maker at more than $2 billion in sales.
The way LSP works is it creates an experience that encourages personal commitment and motivation to move an idea into visual reality. While thinking of how to scale your business, company executives build their ideas and share them with the team. Plato said, “You can learn more about a person in an hour of play than a year of conversation.” Likewise, you can learn more about your business, your people and how to get to the next level of growth using this unique workshop method.
At the end of the workshop, the participants should have a roadmap for themselves about what they will do to grow the business, and the company will know what approach each participate commits to take to make the company scalable. (put pic)
